"I became a school social worker because every student deserves the opportunity to thrive and because emotional well-being improves academic performance," emphasizes Jadyn Castro, a social worker at Grayslake North. “I have a student on my caseload with an anxiety disorder. At the beginning of the year, she could not hold a job due to her anxiety, and she could not fathom going away to school. She is now committed to ISU and actively searching for summer jobs.” By fostering a safe and nurturing environment, social workers ensure that students feel valued, heard, and empowered to overcome obstacles.
"I became a school social worker because as a first-generation Latina, I know how important it is to have support in high school. My parents didn't graduate from high school or go to college. They loved me and worked hard to meet our families' basic needs. As US Immigrants working paycheck to paycheck my parents wanted better for me,” affirms GNHS social worker, Angel Clark. “My journey through higher education was extremely challenging and lonely. I want all students to know that life circumstances might mean that they have a mountain to climb to achieve their dreams but as someone who has climbed up that mountain, I will help light their way.”
Through their work, social workers partner with students, particularly those who are in need of support so that all students can navigate to success.
Creating meaningful supports within a school district requires collaboration and partnership. Social workers join forces with teachers, administrators, parents, and organizations to address the needs of students. Strong relationships and open communication maximize resources and ensure students can access what they need.
Kevin Ockrim, GCHS social worker, reflects on why he chose to pursue this career path. “I became a school social worker because I felt an obligation to give back. Throughout middle school and high school, I had a variety of struggles that showed inside and outside of school. I had an amazing social worker who always made me feel seen and heard and provided guidance when I needed it. My social worker played such a pivotal role in making sure I functioned the best I could in middle school & high school."
