Grayslake Community High School District 127 is thrilled to announce that Susan Remshak, a Biology teacher at Grayslake North High School, has been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year in Illinois. This award honors her exceptional contributions to biology education and her commitment to inspiring a love of science in her students. Remshak was nominated for this honor by a previous AP Biology student from the 2023-2024 academic school year.
Sue's passion for biology ignited during her freshman year at Woodstock High School in an honor biology class. However, it was Mr. Bud Swartout’s advanced biology class in her senior year that cemented her decision to pursue a career in biology and secondary education. "He challenged us to learn difficult concepts and skills, but he also wanted to make sure that we experienced a sense of wonder about the living world around us. I strive to strike this same balance with my students," she shares.
One of Sue's favorite lessons involves transforming a harmless strain of E. coli bacteria with a gene from jellyfish. This advanced lab teaches her AP Biology students about DNA and gene expression, making the bacteria glow under ultraviolet light. Such hands-on projects not only engage students but also deepen their understanding of complex biological processes.
The district has played a pivotal role in supporting Sue's teaching efforts by funding laboratory equipment and modeling kits, including thermocyclers for DNA amplification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). "I love that my students get experience with science process skills that they will use in college and in their careers in STEM fields," Remshak says.
Additionally, she notes the district enabled her to attend high-quality professional development workshops, such as those by 3D Molecular Designs. She adds these workshops have enriched her teaching methods, allowing her to use models to foster inquiry and discovery in her classroom. The district also supported her presentation at the National Association of Biology Teachers Convention in Baltimore, MD, in the fall of 2023.
Sue particularly enjoys teaching topics such as heredity and natural selection. Her innovative teaching methods and enthusiasm for biology continue to inspire her students, preparing them for future careers in science and beyond.
"On behalf of our entire school community, I extend my deepest congratulations to Sue for being named Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year. Her dedication and passion for teaching biology have left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues,” says Superintendent Dr. Mikel Storaasli. “As Sue approaches her final year before retirement, we celebrate not only her exceptional achievements but also the lasting legacy she has created in our district."
Grayslake Community High School District 127 congratulates Sue Remshak on her outstanding achievement and celebrates her dedication to biology education. We are so proud!
