Grayslake Central High School is preparing for one of its most meaningful events of the year: the annual Veterans Day celebration. What started over a decade ago as a modest recognition has evolved into a powerful, school-wide tradition that brings together veterans, students, faculty, and community members to honor the men and women who have served. This year’s celebration promises to continue its impactful tradition with thoughtful tributes and reflections.
A Tradition Rooted in Respect and Growth
Central's Veterans Day observance has come a long way since it first began. Initially, the school observed the day as a day off, but about 10 years ago, school administration decided that being in class allowed for a more impactful way to honor the day. Since then, Veterans Day has grown from a small-scale observance into a large-scale, school-wide event. This year, the assembly will kick off the celebration with a keynote address from Colonel Frankie Cochiaosue, a distinguished U.S. Army officer whose inspiring background will surely resonate with students and veterans alike. This year, more than 100 veterans are expected to join in the celebration, connecting with students and sharing their personal stories in intimate sessions throughout the school day.
Student Involvement and Learning Through Service
Veterans Day at Central is a uniquely student-driven event. More than 40 students are involved in planning and executing the celebration, from organizing the breakfast to arranging seating and helping veterans navigate the day’s events. This hands-on involvement fosters a sense of respect, gratitude, and personal connection with the history they’re learning in the classroom.
“It’s more meaningful than having a day off,” Janczak explains. “Students grow to appreciate the day and what it represents. For many, it’s an opportunity to show their appreciation and perhaps be inspired to serve others in the future.”
Over the years, students have had life-changing encounters during this event, and some have even chosen to pursue service paths after meeting veterans and hearing their stories. This live history lesson connects students with men and women in leadership who have made a meaningful impact—leaders whose diverse identities reflect the rich diversity of D127’s student body.
Honoring Veterans and Community Support
Central’s Veterans Day celebration wouldn’t be possible without the community’s continued support and partnership. Janczak extends his gratitude, saying, “We’re thankful for the community’s support of our veterans, and we look forward to hosting this event for years to come.” The celebration is not only a way for the community to honor veterans but also an invaluable experience for students, one that deepens their understanding of the sacrifices made for freedom.
This Veterans Day, Grayslake Central High School invites the community to celebrate and honor veterans, recognizing the sacrifices made by service members past and present. The event is a meaningful reminder of history, service, and the shared commitment to supporting those who serve.
