This summer, Grayslake D127 is inviting middle school students to channel their inner Jedi, not in a galaxy far, far away, but right here at Grayslake Central High School.
From June 9-13, the D127 LIGHT SABER Dream, Design & Create Camp will guide students through the thrilling process of designing, customizing, and building their own lightsabers using real-world software and manufacturing tools. Led by Chris Ellingsen, CTE instructor, and supported by two student interns, campers will work with industry-aligned technology to bring their vision to life.
But this camp is more than just lights and fun. It’s a launchpad.
“This is often a student’s first exposure to manufacturing and design,” says Ellingsen. “By the time they leave, they’re not just excited about the lightsaber they built, they’re thinking about what else they can create.”
Throughout the week, campers will explore how design turns into production, learn current technical skills, and tour a local manufacturing company to see those same tools and techniques in action. It’s hands-on, high-interest learning that plants the seed for future pathways in engineering, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
