Students in Jeff Miller’s Engineering a Sustainable Future class at Grayslake D127 are gearing up for the annual Spring Plant Sale and Farm Festival, bringing classroom learning to life at Prairie Crossing Farm.
Throughout the year, students step away from their desks to explore agriculture firsthand by planting crops, caring for animals, and harvesting produce for local food pantries. These immersive experiences foster student curiosity about sustainable farming practices and build resilience as they tackle real-world agricultural challenges.
“The festival really showcases the students’ growth and hard work,” says Miller. “They actively engage with the community, deepening their empathy as they see the tangible impact of their efforts.”
In the weeks leading up to the festival, students collaborate to plant, organize, and prepare for the sale, developing essential skills in collaboration and communication. Interns and advanced students demonstrate their investment by taking leadership roles overseeing customer interactions, managing displays, and leading farm tours.
The vibrant festival atmosphere, complete with live music, wagon rides, and demonstrations like sheep shearing, highlights Grayslake D127’s commitment to developing learners. Students gain valuable experience interacting with visitors and showcasing their skills beyond the classroom.
For Miller, this course is about far more than just teaching; it’s about bringing together his passions. "It’s everything I love - the farm, working with students, and connecting with the community."
Join us Saturday, May 10, from 8 AM–5 PM at Prairie Crossing Conservation Farm (550 Harris Road, Grayslake, IL) to see their talents on display and to enjoy wagon rides, farm tours, garden goodies, and more at the Spring Plant Sale & Farm Festival.
