Middle school students will fire up more than just their creativity this summer at Grayslake D127’s FIRE PIT Dream, Design & Create Camp, held from June 16–20 at Grayslake Central High School.
In this one-of-a-kind experience, campers will learn the art of welding, both traditional and robotic, and build a custom-designed fire pit they can proudly take home. Under the direction of Chris Ellingsen, CTE instructor, and alongside high school student interns, participants will use the same software and fabrication tools found in professional manufacturing settings.
It’s not just a cool project. It’s a pathway.
“Students are amazed to see how design becomes reality,” says Ellingsen. “They’re not just learning how to weld—they’re discovering an entirely new world of possibility for their future.”
Campers will explore CAD software, create cut-out themes for the sides of their fire pit, and get hands-on with materials and equipment used daily by skilled tradespeople and engineers. A tour of a local manufacturing company caps off the experience, helping students see how what they’re learning connects to real careers in a booming industry.
With growing opportunities in welding, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, this camp gives students a glimpse into in-demand jobs while building something that’s both functional and fun.
